What causes pain while touching vagina?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am an eighteen-year-old girl and I think something is wrong with my vagina. I feel pain everytime I touch it and I cannot have sexual intercourse because the pain is unbearable. Actually, I am a virgin and I am afraid I will never be able to have babies in my future because of this problem. I would be grateful if you suggest me a solution.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Let me assure you by telling you that the fear you are facing is not uncommon in many teenager girls. The condition of suffering pain in the vagina owing to the fear of losing virginity is nothing but vaginismus. It is a condition in which you voluntarily or involuntarily contracts your vaginal muscles so as to narrow the orifice and not allow anything to enter or penetrate, be it your fingers, or anything else. The issue is your vaginal muscles contraction every time, when you try any insertion in there and you are getting anxious. Some amount of pain would be anyway there for your first act, and you might bleed due to hymen rupture. Plus your anxiety levels and vaginismus is adding to the pain. So you need to relax, try some sequential dilatation, gradual slow entry and may be usage of some lubricants would help you here.
