How can vasomotor rhinitis be effectively managed?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I experience an allergic reaction whenever I drink cold water, go out in the rain, expose myself to a cold breeze, or take a cold water bath. I find relief with Cetirizine.

Please advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

You might be experiencing vasomotor rhinitis, which is somewhat different from allergic rhinitis. To confirm this, we need more details:

  1. Does the rhinitis get triggered when you inhale dusty or polluted air?
  2. Does it worsen when you are near flowers or pollen?
  3. Does it cause nasal congestion or a runny nose?
  4. Does it cause itching in your nose and eyes?
  5. Does it lead to watery eyes?
  6. Does it cause sneezing, and is it associated with thick nasal discharge?
  7. Do you experience headaches or a reduced sense of smell?
  8. Do you have asthma or breathing difficulties?

Treatment for vasomotor rhinitis typically involves intranasal corticosteroids, but we need to be sure of the diagnosis.

Please provide answers to these questions so we can make an accurate diagnosis and determine the appropriate treatment.

Thank you.
