Can a 3 mm hole in a baby's heart close on its own?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had twins, a baby boy and a girl. They were born at 34 weeks. The baby girl is doing fine. The baby boy had lung surfactant issues but is fine now. However, after an echo test, the doctor mentioned that there is a 3 mm hole in his heart. He says it is normal and should close naturally.

Please advise me. I am worried.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Yes, your doctor is correct. Usually, ventricular septal defects, especially if they are small and muscular, close on their own over time. If there are no symptoms such as turning blue or black, difficulty breathing, or recurrent chest infections, there is nothing to worry about. Just wait and watch. It is advisable to do an echo every year to monitor the progress. You can consult me with the echocardiography report for further guidance.

Regards.
