What could be the cause for itchy, burning, watery, and red eyes?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been experiencing itchy, burning, watery, and red eyes for around a month now. Initially, I only had watery eyes, after that, itchiness and burning sensations started. I tried using allergy eye relief drops for the symptoms, but I have finished an entire bottle without any improvement. Every morning, I wake up with my eyes closed shut with crud, but that problem usually goes away during the day. However, my eyes are still watery, turn red, and sometimes get blurry throughout the day. Please help me. Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concern.

It seems like you may have allergic conjunctivitis, which is a common condition that occurs when your eyes react to an allergen. This reaction causes the eyes to produce histamine, which leads to redness, swelling, itching, and burning in the eyelids and conjunctiva. You can manage eye allergies by taking some steps. Avoid or limit contact with the substance that is causing the problem. Refrain from rubbing your eyes and use cold compresses instead. Use antiallergic eyedrops that contain Olopatadine Hydrochloride (such as Olopat) twice a day. Use lubricating eyedrops that contain Polyvinyl Alcohol (such as Flogel) thrice a day. In severe cases, use a mild steroid like Flurisone (Fluticasone Propionate) in pulse doses. Please keep in mind that allergies cannot be cured by medications. The best approach is to stay away from things that trigger your allergies. This is a provisional diagnosis, so I would advise you to consult your ophthalmologist for a detailed examination. I hope this will help you. Regards.
