Can complications can occur during wisdom tooth extraction?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am an 18-year-old female. Is it possible that my wisdom teeth could become infected? What are the chances something could go wrong in removing them? I know I need to remove my wisdom teeth. My primary dentist told me that a few months ago. I have not gotten them removed yet, mainly because I am terrified of it.

They have become much more painful (they all hurt, but one is more painful than the others). It hurts to eat often, and it also feels painful to open my jaw. I also get a lot of earaches on the side where the pain is the worst. I get a lot of headaches too. However, I am not sure if the two are related. What are the chances of them being infected now? And what are the chances that something could go wrong while removing them? Kindly suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Well, every tooth gets infected. There is a very rare chance that something wrong can happen during the removal of a tooth. It is fine if you have not removed your tooth, but you need to visit a dentist and take an X-ray of the problematic tooth to see its position and direction. Infection does not occur all the time which could result in tooth removal. Sometimes, we remove the erupting tooth due to its position and direction to save the other teeth from getting damaged. At least, check the position and direction. We can only say if it is infected or not after taking an X-ray. And if you have to remove this, then do not wait. Get it done. This will relax your mind and soul.

I wish you good health and happiness.

Keep me updated with the improvements.

Thank you.
