Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My upper and lower left wisdom teeth were removed, and the right ones are intact. Will jaw bone on the left side degenerate at the site of extracted lower left wisdom tooth and cause face change? My lower wisdom tooth was extracted four years before, and it was removed due to pain, while my upper left wisdom teeth was removed for a cheek bite two months back; now, I experience decreased fullness of the cheek on the left side, and my jaw opening is not symmetrical as it was before. Will the extraction cause any jaw degeneration in the future? I am extremely depressed now because my mom at the age of 64 had a carious wisdom tooth retained till now with no facial changes and no other problems other than the decayed tooth. Were my extractions of wisdom teeth unnecessary in any way? Should I get any bone graft or dental implants? Please give your opinion regarding this.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your question.

I can understand your concern.

According to your history, the problem must not be because of the removed teeth but due to chewing food. As the third molars are nonfunctional, it will not be the cause of jaw degeneration. What you see in jaw degeneration is hypertrophy of muscle from another side. Please upload a picture of your teeth on both sides and jaw to get full confirmation. Please note that you are chewing from both sides equally.

I hope my answer will help you and visit us if you have any further questions.

Patient's Query

Thank you for your reply,

I have also removed the baby tooth since there is an impacted first premolar, and I will start braces treatment next month. I notice decreased height on the left side after the removal of upper and lower wisdom teeth on smiling, and there is decreased jaw opening on the left side. I am enclosing my jaw and face pictures and OPG (before lower wisdom tooth removal). Please give your opinion regarding this.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com,

The decreased mouth opening can be related to extraction of a lower premolar or transient nerve injury, or it will self-heal within three months. The smile issue is related to lip traction for the same reason. The height is not reduced because tooth intrusion is impossible within that short time.

Please update here if you feel any numbness or tingling sensation on the tip of the tongue or left side of the lip.

Thank you.
