Would GERD cause abdominal pain on exertion?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

During any exertion, my abdomen starts hurting. I got USG and endoscopy done but only found GERD. Rest everything normal. My doctor says it is a muscular pain. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

According to your description, it appears that on exertion, I presume exercises like running, you are suffering from abdominal cramps that could be due to decreased stamina or excessive sweating due to heat, leading to electrolyte loss and causing spasms of abdominal muscles. Secondly, since you have been diagnosed with GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), hence try avoiding spicy and oily meals, especially red chilly powder. Have smaller but frequent meals. Exercise tolerance would increase with time. Until then, stop exerting once the pain starts and have lemon juice water or ORS (oral rehydrating solution) solution. That should take care of the cramps.

Hope this has answered your query.

Regards.
