Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

How long does it take for Acidophilus to get out of your system? Since stopping I have experienced indigestion. I am wondering how long it will take for the probiotic to be out of my system. Last week I started having some digestive issues. Mainly just pain and pressure in my upper abdomen. I did not experience any diarrhea. I thought I was slightly constipated and did take Miralax one night and eventually, the stool did return to normal. However last week I woke up with awful indigestion. Next day, I had lower stomach cramping the entire day. Later that night the pain was on my lower left side, I decided to go to the ER. There they did urine tests, and did press around my belly and back, and took vitals, everything was normal. I was given Maalox and felt better. The pain eventually went away. However, again last night I woke up with awful indigestion. I recently stopped taking Acidophilus because they were not helping. I am wondering if stopping is contributing to my issues.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I do not think your indigestion is because of Acidophilus. Also, these probiotics do not get into the system. It just stays in the GI tract. They do not get absorbed. They can stay for a longer period of time and are beneficial. I think all this indigestion-like feeling is dyspepsia, may be non-specific. Just avoid overeating, spicy, and oily food. You can use Nexum 40 mg tablets over the counter for 1 to 2 weeks, every day in the morning 20 minutes before breakfast. You will get better.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
