Is there any medical procedure to heal acne, pits and scars?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 21 years old with acne prone skin. I have lots of acne scars and pits from popping pimples when younger. I tried Benzoyl peroxide and did not work. What medical procedure can stop pimples and heal the pits and scars? I am suffering from this for the past six to seven years.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Chronic acne with resultant scarring is an indication for treatment with oral Isotretinoin besides topical antiacne preparations like Benzoyl peroxide or Clindamycin. For scarring, there are cosmetic procedures like laser resurfacing or dermabrasion.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

Can you give the side effects of Isotretinoin? Also, I need the details about dermabrasion. Do I have to wait for acne to completely stop before going for this procedure? How many sessions are generally required? Does it guarantee to heal the scars? What if acne returns after the procedure, post dermabrasion effects, skin sensitivity, etc?

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Dryness and cheilitis are the most common side effects of Isotretinoin. Dermabrasion only after six months of stopping Isotretinoin. Dermabrasion or laser improves scars but it does not erase them completely. The number of sessions depends on the severity. The side effects are skin sensitivity, redness, pigmentation, and acne but they can be managed accordingly.
