Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I attended a loud music concert 12 days back. Since then, I have had constant burning pain, ear fullness, and tinnitus in my right ear. This is causing me a lot of distress. I have been to the doctor twice, who has asked me to watch and wait as there are no signs of infection. Today, I have to fly to another place to attend a wedding. I am worried if the flight journey can cause more damage to my ear and if the loud sounds at the event will cause irreversible damage to my ear. Should I cancel my trip? Kindly advise.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern. You seem to be suffering from acoustic trauma. Is there an accompanying hearing loss? Is there a possibility for you to get a pure tone audiogram done to help diagnose your sensorineural hearing loss? I can guide you better on the travel based on the test result. Kindly revert in case of further doubts. Thank you.
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
Thank you for the response.
My flight is in just a few hours, and it will be difficult to get a test done now. With acoustic trauma, can my burning ear pain recover? I am scared that it will be permanent. If I expose myself to more loud situations like being in busy environments, will that significantly reduce my chances of recovery?
Hello,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
Traveling in an aeroplane usually causes a change in the air pressure within the ear which is balanced by your eustachian tube. I suggest you to perform valsalva maneuver, or keep swallowing the saliva or continously chew a gum during take off and landing. Try getting exposed to loud noises for atleast a week. If there is only burning sensation, it will gradually settle down. Is your hearing ability fine?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My hearing seems fine. However, I feel there is permanent damage that I cannot perceive. Therefore, I have decided to cancel my trip and stay home and rest.
Hello,

As they say, prevention is better than cure; taking care of your health is of utmost priority. I suggest you to consult an ENT surgeon for clinical examination. I feel it is only a temporary problem. You can consult me in case of further doubts. I would be happy to help. Thank you.
