Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My mother has slightly low hemoglobin levels and is taking Orofer XT (Ferrous Ascorbate and Folic Acid). She had undergone a routine test two months back. Her doctors have advised her to continue taking Orofer XT for two more months. Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query, and I can understand your concern.

I went through the reports (attachment removed to protect the patient’s identity). She has mild anemia and she must continue taking Orofer XT once daily at night after a meal. I suggest she follow these measures:

  1. Eat one boiled egg daily. Hemoglobin levels will improve by consuming good-quality protein.

  2. A few drops of lemon juice must be added just before eating curries, sambar, and soups. It aids in better absorption and utilization of iron.

  3. Eat more boiled vegetables and fruits.

  4. Avoid or reduce your intake of tea and coffee. They will reduce iron absorption.

Her HbA1C (Hemoglobin A1C) is 6.5 mmol/mol. Is she diabetic?

I hope this information will help you.

Thanks and regards.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thanks for the reply.

She is diabetic. The test was performed two months back and she has almost completed her Orofer XT course of two months. How long can she continue taking the medication?

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and I can understand your concern.

Orofer XT (Ferrous Ascorbate and Folic Acid) is available as capsules or syrup. They are used in the treatment of iron deficiency anemia. She can continue taking Orofer XT for three more months. Diabetes cannot be treated with Orofer XT. Is she on other medications for diabetes?

I hope this information will help you.

Thanks and regards.
