Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 35 years old. I have been drinking for more than a decade. A friend of mine had just developed severe stomach pain, and we learned he had liver cancer. We were unable to do anything. Now, my health has grown to be a concern for me. Is there anything I should be cautious of? Is there a link between hepatitis B and liver cancer, and am I at risk for it?

Thanks.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

  1. Alcohol usage can lead to alcohol-related chronic liver disease, which can progress to cirrhosis and, eventually, liver cancer. Similarly, hepatitis B can cause liver damage and, in the worst-case scenario, liver cancer. Hepatitis B spreads by blood products and bodily fluids, such as during sexual contact.

  2. I would advise you to reduce your alcohol consumption. Examine your liver function tests, hepatitis B and C status (by easy screening), and ultrasound abdomen to determine the present state of your liver.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
