What causes vomiting and diarrhea after drinking alcohol?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had four drinks yesterday. Today I have vomited four times and I have had diarrhea three times. I usually drink a lot more than this, and I never had these symptoms. Is this a hangover or something else?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

You have an infection from the food causing diarrhea, and also vomiting from acidity.

You need the following medicines,

1. Tablet O2 (Ofloxacin 200 mg and Ornidazole) in the morning and night for five days after food.

2. Tablet Pantoprazole 40 mg and Domperidone 10 mg in the morning and night for five days before food.

3. Enterogermina (spores of poly-antibiotic resistant bacillus Clausii) 5 ml oral suspension in the morning and night for three days.

If you get a fever, then you should take, tablet Paracetamol 500 mg in the morning and night for two days after food, with the above medications. Have lots of liquids. Drink lots of water and fresh lime juice. You should be good in one to two days after starting medicines. Take these tablets only if you are not allergic to them.

Follow up immediately in case of any untoward reactions.
