How effective is Nitroglycerin for anal fissures?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My father is suffering from a small anal fissure. Can it be healed by medicine?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The first thing to promote healing is stool should be soft. For that, he should eat a high fiber diet like apples, bananas, oranges, green leafy vegetables like spinach, and raw cucumbers. Avoid smoking, refined food, and fatty and oily food. He should have plenty of fluids and regular exercise. Also, syrup like Lactulose 15 to 30 ml at bedtime to maintain your stool soft.

Second, he should have Nitroglycerin gel two times a day. Also, a sitz bath will be helpful. During a sitz bath, the anus is immersed in warm water for approximately 10 to 15 minutes two to three times daily. Sitz bath kits are available in most drugstores, which contain Potassium permanganate.

For more information, consult an internal medicine physician.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
