Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I am a 25-year-old male, 176 lbs, five feet six inches (66 inches) tall. I drink occasionally. After getting drunk at night, I slept three to four hours and went on a trip for six to seven hours sitting. After that, I got home, and I noticed my ankles had pitting edema. I am starting to worry.
What is the reason for my edema?
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
Thank you for sharing your concern.
Based on the history you provided, the swelling in your ankles is most likely related to a combination of alcohol intake, lack of adequate sleep, dehydration, and prolonged sitting during your trip.
Mild ankle pitting edema after a night of alcohol intake, very little sleep, dehydration, and then sitting for six to seven hours during travel is often caused by temporary fluid pooling in the legs from prolonged immobility and the effects of alcohol on circulation and hydration.
In a healthy 25-year-old, this can happen occasionally and may improve within a day or two with
Walking.
Hydration.
Leg elevation.
Reduced salt intake.
However, persistent, worsening, or recurrent swelling should not be ignored because edema can also be related to problems involving the
Heart.
Kidneys.
Liver.
Veins.
Blood clots.
Apart from this,
If one leg is more swollen than the other.
If there is pain.
Redness.
Chest pain.
Shortness of breath.
Then it should be dealt with cautiously.
Since you are overweight for your height and had prolonged sitting, monitor the situation closely. Avoid alcohol excess, stay hydrated, and seek medical evaluation if the swelling does not resolve quickly or if any concerning symptoms develop.
I hope it helped with the query.
Please let me know if you have any more questions on your mind.
I would be happy to guide you.
Thank you.
