Can chest tightness and difficulty in breathing be related to anxiety?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have both anxiety and asthma. I understand that stress can trigger asthma as well as anxiety. Last night my chest began feeling tight and felt hard to breathe. I have taken my anxiety medication and have been using my inhaler, but not much relief. I am having asthma-like symptoms because I am under anxiety and stress.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. To differentiate the symptoms I need to know if you are having wheezing or not. Vistaril is an H1 receptor blocker it is actually an antihistamine thing similar to Benadryl so it is not actually a strong anti-anxiety medication. I would suggest going to the nearest doctor and seeking emergent medical help if you are having issues with sleep deprivation and worsening symptoms. My feeling is that it is more anxiety than asthma.

Remember that the Albuterol inhaler is sympathomimetic with caffeine. Its excessive use can actually cause insomnia and can increase heart rate.

I hope this has helped you. Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
