Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I underwent a CT scan 17 months ago for a non-related issue (kidney stone). A 0.27 inch linear calcified appendicolith was found on the scan within the proximal appendix without evidence of inflammation. I have no prior history of appendicitis and have had no related symptoms. I recently consulted a general surgeon to operate a hernia that was seen on the scan, and he advised me to get my appendix removed. I consulted another surgeon, and he said he would not remove my appendix based on that information. I also saw a gastroenterologist who suggested no need for an appendicectomy. He referred me to a general surgeon. I have also attached a copy of the reports below. I am very confused about what to do. Can you please tell me what you think I should do based on this information?
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
As per your medical history, I understand your confusion about what to do. I have gone through the reports (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity). The CT (computed tomography) finding for your appendix does not per se require surgery. But since you are undergoing surgery for a hernia, probably on the same side, some surgeons prefer to remove the appendix. In the future, if your appendix gets inflamed and requires surgery, two incisions at the same place will make the muscle weak. Plus, the organ in the picture does not have any function in the body.
Hope this answers your query. Please revert in case of any doubts.
Thanks.
