Does asthma and nasal polyps increase gamma globulin?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have had allergic asthma and nasal polyps for the past year. I have had seasonal asthma since my childhood, and during an endoscopy, they found a 7 mm polyp at the GE junction, which is benign. I am feeling fatigue, and a foul smell is coming from my throat and nose. My recent blood work report shows a mild elevation in gamma globulin and absolute lymphocyte count. I am worried about the elevated gamma globulin. Is it due to something more serious?

Kindly guide.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

According to the history provided, you have asthma and acid reflux disease.

  1. To cure asthma, I suggest using Salmeterol and a steroid combination inhaler. Here, steroid components can lead to throat irritation and secondary throat infection, for example, candidiasis, a fungal infection. As a result, your mouth might smell bad, so do wash your mouth with water after using the inhaler.
  2. Use Betadine mouthwash before sleeping to maintain good oral hygiene. You should get the posterior pharynx examined by an ENT otolaryngologist.
  3. Prolonged acid reflux can also lead to throat irritation, and secondary to it, there might be a foul smell from the mouth.
  4. Absolute lymphocytosis can be considered a viral infection here, for which symptomatic management is done. If the CBC report is not improved even after a week, then further workup needs to be done.
  5. If acid reflux is not improving with medication, then fundoplication, like surgical management, can be done.
  6. Platelet count is slightly low, and a giant platelet is seen, suggesting the destruction of platelets secondary to an infection. Gamma globulin level also seems to increase here secondary to infection.
  7. For acidity, try doing the following.
  • Take less spicy foods.
  • Avoid heavy meals.
  • After dinner, sleep only after two hours.
  • Keep your head raised by putting a pillow under your head while sleeping.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reach out in case of further queries.

Thank you.
