Can a 76-year-old with undiagnosed ADHD get support?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am 76 years old and have just learned that I most likely had ADHD my whole life without knowing it. In hindsight so many things suddenly make sense. Part of me wants answers years ago. I wonder if there is any point seeking treatment this late in life. I’ve been able to get by, but I still have issues with organizing and focusing. Is there any real ADHD support for someone my age, or am I basically too late?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your query and understand the concern.

It is often very difficult to determine whether organizational difficulties and poor concentration are due to the normal aging process or ADHD.

Misplacing items, forgetfulness, easy distractibility are common and overlapping symptoms of anxiety disorders, ADHD, normal aging process and mild cognitive impairment

With increasing age, the chances of mild or major cognitive decline increase significantly. Common symptoms of cognitive decline are unable to plan something, difficulty in managing finance and calls, lost in familiar surroundings, repeating things or sentences, forgetting names of known people, etc.

Some screening tests such as the Montreal Cognitive Assessment test and the mini mental state examination are helpful to differentiate between ADHD forgetting and cognitive impairment.

If these screening tests turn normal, then the possibility of an ADHD diagnosis is likely.

Simple behavioral modifications are helpful in lack of concentration and organization difficulties, such as

  1. Meditation.

  2. Regular physical activity.

  3. Make short structured work notes.

  4. Set small and achievable goals.

  5. One task at a time.

Dwelling excessively on the past is unlikely to help, as we cannot go back and change it.

I hope this information helps you.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
