Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a three-year-old son who has been diagnosed with ASD and has been prescribed 0.25 mg of Risperdal a day, along with occupational therapy because of aggressive and self-harming behavior and has been taking it for seven months. He has shown improvement in the first three months but as the doctor increased the dosage in the recent month he has shown some concerning symptoms like worsened aggressive behavior, agitation, restlessness, urinary incontinence, and he is doing weird things like taking his genital out and playing with it, we do not know where that has come from. We are concerned whether the side effects might be staying with him when he grows up and apparently, we cannot stop this medication without another drug. Will the side effects stay with him? What can I do for my child? Kindly suggest.

Thank you

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your problem and concern about your son.

He is on tablet Risperidone (Benzisoxazole and Piperidine) but if he is stable then why does your doctor increase his dose? Your son may have side effects like restlessness and agitation. If he has not had urinary incontinence in the past then it can be also due to a high dose. Please check the urine analysis. If he has a urine infection that can also lead to frequent genital touch (burning pain during micturition). You can ask your doctor to try valproate for your son if he is not responding to Risperidone. Your son will not have trouble due to medication side effects. It will resolve once the medication stops.

I hope that you get your answer.

Thank you.
