What causes foul-smelling green discharge from the nose?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
Seven days back, I had flu-like symptoms with very mild fever (max 99 degrees) and little body ache, which lasted for a day or two. However, I did not get any sneezing or cough to date. At present, there is no fever. But after then, my right nostril is consistently producing foul-smelling greenish color mucous, and it is so repulsive as if something rotting inside. I doubted it is sinusitis and took Augmed 625 for three days (six tablets completed). The feverish feeling, body aches, and weakness resolved. However, this smelly mucus discharge, which is nauseating me 24 hours, is not getting cured. I am taking steam vapor twice a day along with Otrivin drops to relieve the congestion. While my left nostril is often transparent and occasionally produces normal white phlegm but right nostril is the culprit here. I am also getting headaches on the right side as if deep inside the skull and right jaw above the molar teeth. I consulted an ENT. She changed my antibiotics to Florenza 325 (twice a day) and also gave Mucolite SR tabs. I have already completed three days of this new regimen. But nothing seems to improve. She examined and said I do not have any visible Nasal polyps. My query is, does this sound normal to you? Does this sinusitis take very long to cure in spite of antibiotics? If it does not seem to be improved in the next two days, what would you suggest as the next course of action? The smelly discharge is nauseating me. I did not notice any blood in the phlegm. I keep blowing out the mucus and more seems to keep forming inside and occasionally drips down to the back of the throat. My tonsils are fine. I have no cough or sore throat or heaviness in the lungs. I am looking forward to the best remedy to get rid of this smelly mucus.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
You defaulted on the course and dosage of Augmentin 625. It was supposed to have been taken thrice daily for at least five days. With the regimen that you made, I doubt if any bacteria would have got killed, but you would have most probably resulted in a resistant strain of bacteria inside your nose. Complete the second course of antibiotics as told by the ENT. If there is no improvement, give the mucus for culture sensitivity and take the right antibiotic. Additionally, take some antihistaminic and montelukast combination. Avoid excess steam if you are in polluted areas. Do not smoke or drink. Drink plenty of warm fluids. Get back to us if you need it. You may need a radiological investigation.
