Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I used to walk nearly every day, exceeding 10,000 steps, resulting in significant weight loss and eventually becoming underweight. This led to a deficiency in essential nutrients, causing the loss of my menstrual period for the past three months. However, I have recently increased my food intake substantially, ensuring a rich supply of nutrients and vitamins, including ample fruits and vegetables. Will this increased and nutrient-dense diet help restore my menstrual cycle, considering my current underweight condition? Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Your concern is the absence of menstrual periods for three months following significant weight loss. Being underweight (BMI- body mass index - less than 19.5) induces a state of hibernation in your body, causing a pause in non-essential functions, including menstruation. The natural resumption of regular periods after substantial weight loss typically takes six to 12 months. Give your body time to adapt to these changes and establish a new normal. If, after six to 12 months, your periods have not resumed, we may consider starting treatment. I suggest you maintain a healthy diet and continue doing regular exercise to bring your weight to a healthier range, around 125 to 132 pounds.

I hope this helps.

Please revert in case of further queries.

Thank you.
