Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My last period was a month ago. I have had three pregnancies before. Now my beta hCG result is 401 mIU/mL. Is this a normal hCG level?
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understand your concern.
The beta hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) above 10 mIU/mL is positive and is a positive pregnancy test. If you want to see the progression of pregnancy, then it is better to have repeat beta hCG after 48 hours of the previous level. If it shows an increased level of more than 60 %, then it is a normal pregnancy. If it shows an increase of less than 60 % of the previous, then it is outside the uterus (ectopic pregnancy) and needs urgent evaluation. If it shows a reduction from the previous levels, then it is resolving (miscarriage) pregnancy. In case of bleeding or pain, immediately report to the gynecologist in an emergency. Have Folic acid 0.4 mg daily. Keep a check on any abnormal symptoms and have another beta hCG test 48 hours from the previous one. In very early pregnancy, urine tests and transvaginal scans are unable to detect clearly, so beta hCG is the best.
I hope you get my point.
Best of luck.
