Is there any alternative to Trust pill for contraception?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I need an opinion about Trust pills for birth control. I had unprotected intercourse with a guy and took two Trust pills yesterday as an emergency contraceptive pill. Safe sexual activity is supposed to be after five days of pill, but we had unprotected intercourse today also. So, I need something to avoid pregnancy. I will continue to take the pill, but is there an alternative way to prevent pregnancy?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

If you have been taking your birth control every day at the same time without missing any pill, there is no requirement for backup emergency pills. And also, repeated intake of the emergency pill will cause side effects like nausea, vomiting, breast tenderness, bloating, irregular spotting or bleeding, delayed and heavy period. Trust pill (Ethinyl estradiol, Levonorgestrel, Ferrous fumarate) contains only 125 mcg of Levonorgestrel. But to act as emergency contraception, you need at least 750 mcg to 1000 mcg of Levonorgestrel like four pills 12 hours apart. Hence it is useless to take two pills after intercourse as emergency contraception. It would be wise to take your regular contraceptive correctly and to avoid intercourse around mid-cycle.

I hope this was useful.

Regards.
