Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am 27 years old and soon I am going to get married. My doubts are, what are the birth control methods I can follow. What precaution should I follow for short-term and long-term birth control? May I know the difficulties which a girl face during her periods? I have no idea about that. She might be shy to express her difficulty. If I have prior knowledge, then I can trigger an indirect manner and communicate with her smoothly. During which period can I have intercourse for fertility? And when it can be avoided?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read and understood your problem.

Regarding birth control, you can use a condom or your wife can use oral contraceptive pill (OCP). There are several brands having no major difference so use easily available one. These are the two best suitable for newlyweds. It can be used for both short-term and long-term. Other methods like intrauterine device and long-acting injections are more suitable after first childbirth. Regarding periods, you have the wrong ideas that it is a difficult time for them. Periods are just a normal thing. Some of them may get pain or more bleeding which is controllable by medicine. You can have premarital counseling to know everything in detail.

The so-called safe period is not 100% foolproof to avoid pregnancy. Pregnancy can take place at any time except during periods. But is less probable during first and last week of the monthly cycle. If you want to avoid pregnancy, then use a contraceptive. If you want pregnancy, then try the whole month except for the bleeding phase. There is no need to restrict your pleasure and limit your chance.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thanks for your details and suggestions. Please let me know the usage of oral contraceptive pill. Does it need to be taken daily? Any precaution in food habits need to take care of? I came to know there are two types of OCP such as combined oral contraceptive pill and progestin only pill. Which one is appropriate?

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Starting from the fifth day of onset of period one tablet is to be taken daily at a fixed time. Your wife should take tablets for three weeks and then last week I mean the fourth week, seven days, is tablet free. Then again a new pack. Combined oral contraceptive pill is the best one. You can opt for it.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
