Is it safe to use low-androgen birth control pills with Estriol?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I recently had hair loss due to IUD, which releases progesterone. I have had it removed and am now on a low androgen BCP prescribed by my gynecologist. I also have a bottle of Estriol. My question is if I take Estriol, could this be harmful and cause estrogen dominance, which has side effects of hair loss? Or is it safe and will help me in conjunction with the low androgen BCP? What is your opinion?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concern.

Every individual is different physically as well as emotionally. Hormonal contraceptives also have side effects, but it is different for everyone. It is not necessary that every woman get similar or all side effects of any hormone. It depends on age, previous and present history, general body health, and environmental, emotional, and physical issues. In your case, progesterone is not necessarily affecting the hair. Weather, any other medical treatment, aging, hormonal imbalance, and menopause can also affect hair loss . As I said, hormones have their effects, and everyone can get these differently. So it is better to avoid hormones mostly near menopause. These hormones can give you long-term side effects as well.

Androgen can give masculine side effects like abnormal hair growth, change in voice, rough skin, etc. Similarly, estrogen at this age for a long term can trigger breast and endometrial cancer as long-term side effects. This whole description I mentioned above is to tell you that hormones have side effects and can act differently in every individual, so it is not confirmed that you got hair loss from a contraceptive device.

Have healthy care of your hair. You can have protein, herbal treatment, oils, herbal remedies, vitamin supplements, and a balanced, nutritious diet. This will help you to recover from your hair loss. But Have a complete check and treatment of any health issue like diabetes, thyroid, hypertension, vitamin deficiency, etc. Try to have complete, regular treatment. Avoid overuse of hormones; instead, use long-term natural precautions.

Thank you.
