Is it safe to travel with blocked heart vessels?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am writing to share an urgent medical concern regarding my father. He has recently suffered a blood clot and has been advised to undergo surgery, which is scheduled for the coming week. However, he is hesitant to proceed with the operation here, as he wishes to return to his home country for treatment.

There is an option for him to travel to his home country this week. The planned route includes a flight of approximately five hours, followed by a car journey of about three hours and 30 minutes. Considering waiting time, baggage collection, and potential traffic, the total travel time is estimated to be nine to ten hours.

We are very concerned about whether he is fit to undertake such a long journey without endangering his health. We can provide his medical records and test results from the current hospital to assist in assessing the risk and determining whether this trip is advisable.

Any medical advice or support you can offer in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern and the need for guidance regarding your father's travel and treatment plan.

  1. To provide you with the most accurate advice, could you please elaborate on the blood clot you mentioned?
  2. Specifically, how was the clot diagnosed?
  3. I presume you are referring to a blockage in the blood vessels supplying blood to his heart muscle. If so, I would greatly appreciate it if you could share detailed reports of his angiogram and echocardiogram. Furthermore, could you please specify the type of surgery being considered?
  4. Is it an invasive surgical procedure or a percutaneous intervention?
  5. Understanding his current symptoms is also crucial. Has he experienced any recent health issues or hospitalizations?
  6. Additionally, could you provide his current vital signs, including blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen saturation, and ECG (electrocardiogram) results?

Please also include details of his current medication regimen, any coexisting health conditions, and results from recent laboratory investigations.

With this comprehensive information, we can calculate his risk score and advise on the urgency of any necessary medical procedures, taking into account his overall health status.

Please do not hesitate to reach out with any further questions.

I am here to assist you.

Kind regards.

Hello doctor,

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I have reviewed the reports (attachment removed to protect the patient’s identity). The exercise test your father took came back positive. This means he needs further testing to determine if there are any blockages in the arteries that supply blood to his heart (a condition known as coronary artery disease). The good news is that the ultrasound of his heart (echocardiogram) shows that his heart is functioning normally.

I noticed that you have not provided the information I requested in my previous message. If you can share those details, I will be able to give you more specific advice. If your father is not experiencing any pain while taking his medication and can engage in a reasonable amount of activity without any issues, it should be safe for him to travel.

However, if he experiences chest pain with minimal activity, feels short of breath, or has a heavy sensation in his chest, it would be best for him to undergo a more detailed test called an angiogram. This test can pinpoint the location of any blockages, and doctors may recommend a procedure to open them (revascularization).

I hope this explanation is helpful.

Please feel free to reach out with any further questions. I am here to help.

Regards.
