How can coronary artery disease be treated without surgery?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My father has coronary artery disease and a blockage in three arteries. One artery was treated with a stent, but other doctors recommend bypass surgery. However, my father is afraid of undergoing surgery. Is there any treatment available that does not involve surgery?

Please advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have reviewed the reports. Currently, there are two best available options for coronary artery disease (CAD): one is bypass surgery, and the other is stenting. Other available options are not as effective and are only considered if neither of the two primary options is possible. Given the multiple blockages, bypass surgery remains the treatment of choice. However, if bypass is not preferred, stenting is another reasonable and viable option. In some cases, it may not be possible to open 100 percent of the blockages, but in those situations, we can manage the condition with medication, especially if the blockage is in a less critical vessel. Stenting can still be performed, but for more complicated lesions, it is typically done at specialized centers. Overall, if bypass surgery is not an option, stenting may be a reasonable alternative and should be considered.

I hope this helps, and please feel free to reach out if you have any further questions.
