Can a collarbone fracture heal by itself or need surgery?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I fell from a bike and suffered a right collarbone fracture. It has been three weeks and bone still seems to be moving. My hand is in a sling and I am also wearing the brace. Two to three days back started noticing bone tenting towards the skin. Will the fracture heal by itself or will I need surgery?

Answered by Dr. Ramesh C. G

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Treatment for clavicle fracture depends on the fracture configuration and displacements. If it is tenting the skin over it or shortening of more than 2 cm, it is an indication for surgical treatment. Surgery means we open the fracture site and reduce the fragments and fix it with plate and screws. Please send X-ray picture and the clinical photo of your collar region.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have attached the files.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Please send a clinical photo to see skin condition. As you were telling some skin tenting is present. If the skin is normal, I think the displacement is acceptable and continue wearing the arm pouch for a total of six weeks. Fracture union takes anywhere around 2 to 3 months. By the end of six weeks, you can remove arm pouch.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

I have attached the image.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

That is because a small vertical fragment of the bone is poking the skin. Is it really hurting you and causing any cosmetic problem?

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

No, it is not hurting me nor do I have any issues cosmetically.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Then no need to worry. It will definitely unite, it will take 2 to 3 months. But first six weeks strictly immobilize your shoulder and elbow in arm pouch. Take tablet CissQ plus (Cissus quadrangularis extract and tricalcium phosphate) 1-0-1 after food for 20 days.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you so much. So this fragment will unite with other bones?

Answered by Dr. Ramesh C. G

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

100 percent do not sleep on that side. Take that tablet. It helps in a faster union as well as it contains Calcium also. No need to take Calcium supplements if you take CissQ plus tablet. What is your work? Some patients ask directly for surgery. I have done few cases. But 95 % of this fracture does not require surgery. And in your case, definitely non-operative treatment is the best.
