HomeAnswersDentistrybone graftMy lower gums are affected, and I would like to know about gum grafting and how it heals. Please help.

Can maintaining oral hygiene and diligently following post-operative instructions increase the success of a gum graft?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I would like to learn more about what happens to the bone after a gum graft, such as how it heals, changes, and potentially becomes stronger, or at least partially restores itself after a soft tissue graft is performed. In my case, only the bottom gum is affected, while the top is unaffected and does not require surgery. Additionally, I am curious about bone loss types, including angular bone loss, and the factors that influence bone changes when teeth are orthodontically moved with braces, especially in juvenile cases. Besides these factors, are there any other considerations in juvenile cases? I am also interested in understanding the differences between localized and generalized cases of gum and bone issues. How do they differ, and what similarities do they share? Lastly, which of these cases, localized or generalized, is more common?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

If gum grafting is performed, it typically takes approximately five to six months for the bone to heal, and the bone's anchorage to the tooth improves during this time. The less interdental bone (the bone between two teeth) that is lost, the faster the healing process tends to occur. Gum grafts tend to be successful if proper oral hygiene is maintained and if patients follow the post-operative instructions diligently. Once the healing process is deemed satisfactory, which can be assessed through clinical evaluation and X-rays, orthodontic braces can be placed to align the teeth properly.

I hope this helps. Thank you.
