Is there a possibility of HIV after condom breakage?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am 24 years old. I had double-protected sex with a lady three weeks back. But during sex, accidentally, the condoms broke, and I immediately took them off. I got tested for viral markers immediately the same day, and it came back negative. I have been feeling sick for the past five days. I am afraid that there is a risk of me having HIV(Human Immunodeficiency Virus) even after using double protection.

Please clarify.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

You would not be at risk if there was no exposure to vaginal fluid with your glans penis. Even if the exposure was there, the chances of acquiring HIV are very low as the contact period was extremely short.

I hope I have answered your query.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor

Thank you for your, reply,

Within seconds I took it out, and there is no exposure of the vaginal fluid to my glans penis. I have tested the same day for viral markers immediately because I got extremely afraid, and the test result came back negative.

For the past five days, I am feeling sick, and I was psychologically disturbed. Is there any risk of me getting HIV?

Do I need to get tested again?

Thank you for your time and advice.

Would really appreciate any recommendations you have.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

There is no risk of acquiring HIV from the mentioned exposure as the exposure was not enough to transmit HIV virus. No need of further testing. Viral marker do not become reactive immediately after the test and there was no sense of testing immediately after the exposure. What you are experiencing may be due to psychological disorder or for some unrelated illness. And for this you can visit a good general physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor

Thank you for your reply,

From the day the test has come negative I am feeling a bit tired and some fatigue. After bathing, I feel like sweating and some times I experience itching and I feel some pain in my legs and my body feels fatigued. And I feel a little discomfort in my mouth and I am extremely afraid. Please tell me what to do.

Thank you for your time and advice.

Would really appreciate any recommendations you have.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

These all are the symptoms of anxiety because deep in subconscious you have a threat of being positive for HIV. If they are not getting relieved even after my assurance of yours being HIV negative then you need to consult a good psychiatrist or or may require few psychotherapy sessions.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

If I get up from sleep, I feel sweating, and if I sit under a fan, it will get relieved. Every day I am getting extremely afraid that I am infected with HIV. Can I test once again?

Thank you for your time and advice.

Would really appreciate any recommendations you have.
