Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have felt a sharp and dull, stabbing pain on my left breast since last year. It does not occur continuously nor in specific regions of the breast. What might be the cause of this? Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Breast pain, also known as mastalgia, can have various causes, including:

1. Hormonal changes: Cyclical breast pain is common and often associated with hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle. The pain can occur in one or both breasts and may vary in intensity.

2. Muscular strain: Sometimes, pain in the chest area can be caused by muscle strain or injury in the chest wall or surrounding muscles.

3. Infection or inflammation: Certain conditions like mastitis (breast infection) or inflammation of the breast tissue (such as from costochondritis) can cause pain in the breast.

4. Fibrocystic breast changes: These are benign changes in breast tissue that can cause pain or discomfort, particularly before menstruation.

5. Trauma: Injury or trauma to the breast, such as a fall or blunt force, can lead to localized breast pain.

6. Medications: Certain medications, such as hormonal therapies or oral contraceptives, may contribute to breast pain as a side effect.

7. Breast-related conditions: Conditions like fibroadenomas (noncancerous breast lumps), cysts, or breast abscesses can sometimes cause breast pain.

I suggest you follow the below-mentioned instructions:

  1. Wear a well-fitted supportive bra.
  2. Apply warm compresses to the affected area.
  3. Practice relaxation techniques to manage any stress or anxiety you may have.
  4. Kindly consult a specialist for physical examination and treatment.

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.
