Hello doctor,

I need help understanding the results of my echocardiogram from a few months ago. I only recently received them. I had a baby a few months ago and was back in the hospital a week later with pneumonia. During that hospital stay for pneumonia, the doctors said my blood work kept indicating that I might have heart failure.

Please advise.

The left ventricle of your heart is slightly weak, showing mild dysfunction. This can sometimes occur in the last month of pregnancy or within five months after delivery. Often, this condition returns to normal or near-normal within six months. I recommend repeating the echocardiogram to assess your heart’s current status. This condition is known as peripartum cardiomyopathy. I hope you are taking the prescribed medications.
