What medications help in the case of carpal tunnel syndrome?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have carpal tunnel syndrome, and my wrist appears swollen. I went to the emergency room, but they sent me home. I was given painkillers, but I can tolerate the pain to some extent. The problem is that I cannot pick up anything with my right hand. My index finger and thumb are numb. What can I do now? What medications can I take?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your problem. You should understand that carpal tunnel syndrome is the compression of the median nerve in the wrist. It can be associated with conditions like hypothyroidism, steroid use, pregnancy, diabetes mellitus, or obesity. Make sure you are not suffering from these. Sometimes it can arise in the absence of these conditions. I suggest you take medicines in the early stages, but if it does not improve, you may need surgery. There are three things you could do to reduce the pain. Continue taking the medicines, use a good wrist splint to immobilize the wrist, and apply ice.
