Is chemotherapy advised for fourth stage duodenal cancer?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My father is having fourth stage (metastatic) duodenal cancer. Doctor did bypass surgery for having food and liquids. Now they told us that chemotherapy is risky and left the decision on us that we will do chemotherapy do or not. Please let me know how risky chemotherapy is.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I am extremely sorry to know what your father is suffering from. It is stage IV cancer. The only means to reduce and control the further spread of cancer is chemotherapy. Every medicine comes with a side effect so it does not mean you should not take it.

Chemotherapy will control the pains and all cancer-related symptoms. Also, it will extend his life making the quality of life better and bearable. The stent that is placed will also further get blocked if no chemotherapy is given. Hence, I will recommend you to go for chemotherapy.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

Will you please let me know how much time he has. Also, I want to know how much it affects the life of a patient by side effect of chemotherapy.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

It will be serious, if not given any chemotherapy. Within a year maybe, the exact time cannot be said. GI (gastrointestinal) cancers are aggressive. On chemotherapy, his life will be extended.

Side effects were more in olden times when modern medicines were not available. Nowadays, there are no much hazardous side effects, and minor ones can be dealt with.
