Can left-sided chest pain occur due to acidity?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have had borderline high cholesterol for the past five to six years. My blood tests, such as homocysteine and troponin-I, were normal three to four months ago. Since last week, I have been experiencing mild pain on the left side, which I usually assume is related to gas and acidity. I have noticed that whenever I experience gas and acidity, I also tend to feel mild pain on the left side of my chest. This pain typically subsides within one or two days, but this time it has persisted for three to four days, accompanied by gas and acidity symptoms.

Several doctors ruled out heart-related problems a year ago through TMT, echocardiography, and ECG. However, since my cholesterol levels are on the higher side, I always worry about localized chest pain. The pain is momentary and does not come with shortness of breath, or central or back chest pain. I do not feel any angina, nor do I experience sweating or rapid breathing. Aside from the localized chest pain, everything seems normal.

Please find the attached report and photograph, and kindly advise. Also, if I want to rule out any blockages, which test (CT or MRI) would be appropriate? I do not think angiography is necessary at this moment since my troponin-I and homocysteine levels are normal.

Please guide me accordingly.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have reviewed all your reports (attachment removed to protect patient identity). An angiogram is not required at this time. Your serum uric acid, LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol, and triglycerides are elevated, and your Vitamin D3 levels are borderline. Please take a combination of Fenofibrate and Atorvastatin once a day at night. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss this with them, and start taking the medication with their consent.

Additionally, take calcium and vitamin D3 tablets for one month. Continue taking Pantoprazole 40 mg once a day before dinner. It is advisable to avoid a high-protein diet to manage your uric acid levels. Please repeat the lipid profile and serum uric acid tests after one month.

Thanks and regards.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

Do you suspect this pain is related to a heart problem, such as blockages? Which CT scan or MRI can help rule this out?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

It is not heart-related, so do not worry. Continuing your medication, following dietary restrictions, and maintaining regular exercise are sufficient.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
