How to diagnose behavioral issues in children?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My daughter is six years old, she remains quiet most of the time, does not mingle with children of her age, and does silly careless mistakes in her homework. What can I do to help her?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

As per your description, the child must likely be under some form of psychological stress leading to such behavior. I would suggest giving her a break from school or class for a week to two weeks and spending more time with her and trying and extract from her mind what may or may not be bothering her at school or class and what makes her happy. Utilize this information to understand your child better and then accordingly you shall be able to deal with the situation at hand. Try this method for two to three weeks and see if there is a difference. If there is no difference, the child should be evaluated by a pediatric psychologist for depression or anxiety disorders.
