Patient's Query

Dear doctor,

I am 36 years old and my wife is 29 years of age. We were married four years back. Wife had three abortions in the first, second and third year of marriage. Now, we have undergone detailed treatment and understood that I have a chromosome aberration. The result shown in the report is 46, XY, t(11:22)(q24:q12),16qh+, balanced reciprocal translocation. The doctor said my chance of having a baby is only 30 %. That too, the chances of a disabled baby is high. I want an advice. Will the hospital give treatment by doing IUI taking sperm from a sperm bank or from sperm donors? Are there any other treatment modes?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can think of two options for your difficulty:

  1. Most of the hospitals have a supply of frozen sperms from local or major cities. There, they will have semen from screened donors whose blood group, complexion, build and eye color are matched with yours. Few hospitals, if they have regular IUI (intrauterine insemination) may be collecting and freezing from local donors.
  2. You can opt for IVF (in-vitro fertilization). We can prepare the embryo with your sperm and your wife's egg. We can take a biopsy from the embryo, do a PIGD (preimplantation genetic diagnosis) and diagnose any genetic problem, discarding the defective embryos. By this, we can pick that 30 %. There is still a chance to miss the defect if mosaicism is present, I mean if all the cells do not have the defect. Biopsy may pick a healthy cell. We can take the chance.
