How to cure a dry and wet cough that has been persistent for over two weeks?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My mother is 63 years old, and she has had a dry and wet cough. She says when she looks up or eats nuts, she coughs. She has to cover her throat with a scarf most of the time. She coughs so much it makes me anxious, which has been going on for over a week or two. She went to the doctor, and he said it is a "nasal drip"? But she is coughing a whole lot more than usual, and it is heavy.

She has depression and thyroid. She takes Nuzac. She also has cholesterol and also takes medicine for that. What do you think is making her cough? Should I be worried?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Cough with expectoration may be due to pneumonia or acute bronchitis. As your doctor mentioned, post-nasal drip also can cause cough, but it is not associated with sputum production. Other possibilities, like pulmonary tuberculosis, may present in 2 to 3 weeks of cough, with a rise of temperature in the evening and night sweats. Please consult your physician, take a chest X-ray and sputum examination, and get treated accordingly.

Take care.
