Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have had some discomfort in my throat for a few weeks now. I have had a swollen tonsil for years, which many doctors have examined. Now, with this new pain in my throat and odd symptoms, I am worried about throat cancer. Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern. Firstly, I need to know some information regarding your condition, such as below:

  1. Is the throat pain you are complaining of present throughout the day, or is it episodic? If episodic, how many episodes do you experience in a year?
  2. During these episodes, do you experience a high-grade fever?
  3. Have you had any history of a cold, running nose, or itchy throat?
  4. Do you have a history of smoking or tobacco abuse?
  5. Additionally, why do you suspect you have throat cancer? Have you noticed any blood-tinged sputum or a hoarse voice?

Also, send me a picture of the inside of your throat so I can have a look. In any case, please try not to worry, it is likely nothing serious. I hope this has helped you. Kindly follow up with the above requested information if you have more doubts.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Thanks for the prompt reply doctor,

Here are the answers to your requested information. No, I never smoked, but I used to chew tobacco many years ago. I always fear the worst case scenario, I do not know why. I blew my nose and saw a little blood, but not much. I have not been coughing up blood, but the discomfort in my throat comes and goes. Now, it is just anxiety around it. Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern.

I have reviewed the picture you attached (attachments removed to protect the patient’s identity), I must say your throat seems absolutely fine except for the tobacco stains. I do not see any tumors or signs of throat infection or tonsil issues. Although chewing tobacco is bad for your health, it is up to us to either overcome the fear of cancer and continue using tobacco or be carefree and quit the habit. There is no point in living in fear and confusion. The blood from your nose could have been due to a dry nose. Please avoid blowing your nose harshly, and if the inside of your nose is dry, use a simple saline nasal spray and petroleum jelly to keep it moist. The condition you are experiencing is called globus hystericus. There is nothing to worry about a disease. I hope this has helped you. Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.

Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
