What are these raised bumps that look like chickenpox on my skin?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I got red bumps that look like chickenpox all over my stomach and arms. They were not itchy, and I did not feel them. I just noticed them now. They started appearing out of nowhere all over the surface of my skin. They started traveling down on my body too. Also, it is not painful, but they are just raised on my skin. Would you please suggest me what this is? Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thanks for writing in, and I understand your concern. It is difficult to be sure without physical examination. It looks like pityriasis rosea (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity) to me. It is a kind of inflammatory skin condition characterized by oval to round erythematous red raised skin lesions, mainly over the trunk and proximal extremities. Face and distal parts of extremities are usually spared. The lesions are asymptomatic in most cases. Lesions on the trunk are arranged in a downward slant like an inverted fir tree. These lesions can appear after any viral infection and sometimes without that too. You can apply a medium potency steroid like Mometasone with moisturizer. The lesions usually subside within a few weeks, even if not treated. Regards.
