Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been suffering from a severe cough and cold for the past five months, which may last up to one month. One day, I took steam to reduce my cold, but since that night, my ear has been clogged. The next day, I went to the doctor, and he gave me a decongestant. Three to four days later, my right ear was completely blocked, and the next day, when I blew my nose, my ear was released. My ear has stayed the same since then. It opens when I blow my nose, and I feel some fluid within. There is irritation, and my ear is clogged in the morning but later opens. Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Your complaint and history imply that you have ETD (Eustachian tube dysfunction). This happens when your eustachian tube, which links your middle ear to the posterior section of your nasal cavity, fails to open when swallowing or yawning. It is essential because it maintains pressure homeostasis within your ear. There are several causes, but in your instance, it is most likely caused by edema (fluid buildup) in the eustachian tube. As you requested some home remedies, I am not going to recommend medical therapy but rather some home tactics that may assist with symptom resolution and future prevention.

  • Practice the Valsalva maneuver (Valsalva maneuver is a breathing exercise used to slow down your heart rate)at least 30 to 40 times a day.

  • Steam inhalation should be taken three to four times a day.

  • Chew some chewing gum.

  • Avoid cold beverages.

If symptoms persist, go to an ENT (ear, nose, and throat) specialist for a proper examination to exclude other causes and prevent complications.

I hope this helps.

Kindly revert in case of further queries.

Thank you.
