Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

During a recent surgery to repair my nasal valves, my otolaryngologist out fractured both my inferior turbinates as a part of the treatment. I am concerned if compensatory hypertrophy always develops in the inferior turbinate mucosa to make up for the additional space created by the out fracturing. It already feels too open, dry, crusty, with too much air passage on the left side. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Compensatory hypertrophy (increase in the size of the tissue after surgery to compensate for the damaged tissue's function) does not always develop in the mucosa to make up for the additional space. At the same time, crustiness can be controlled by appropriate local measures like ointments and douching (saline solution irrigation in the nose to remove debris). However, valve surgeries do involve the inferior turbinate (an important part of the nasal cavity that extends from deep inside to the front part of the nose), as the upper part of the turbinate forms the lower part of the lateral border of the nasal valve.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply. Also, I want to know if the formation of compensatory hypertrophy is common, as I am hoping it will make up for the additional space I have.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Yes, it is common for susceptible individuals to show some increase in tissue volume if the airway space is more after surgery. Susceptible individuals include smokers and those with allergies as their mucosa is constantly getting irritated.
