Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had sex in the first 14 days of my cycle, and the condom broke. I had taken a contraceptive pill within 30 minutes of that, and after a week, I had bleeding for two to three days. I have not had my period, but I have been having cramps since last week. Can I be pregnant? And when will I have my period?

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Pregnancy cannot happen this way. Pregnancy can occur if precum (pre-ejaculate) or if semen is released inside the vagina. You can carry out urine for pregnancy test (UPT) from the first day of a missed period. If you do not know when your next period is due, then do the test at least ten days after you have unprotected sex. A delay of up to one week is considered normal if it happens once or twice a year and if there is no underlying disease. Common causes of delayed menses include pregnancy, stress, thyroid problems, sudden weight loss, being overweight, doing too much exercise, contraceptive pills, PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), endometriosis, and hormonal imbalance during sexual activity. Wait for menses to happen. If they do not occur and it has been more than 10 days, then go for the urine pregnancy test. If it comes negative, go for a beta hCG (human chorionic gonadotrophin) test, and then visit a doctor for a detailed evaluation.

I hope this information will help you.

Thanks.
