My heart rate increased after isolating myself due to COVID-19. Should I be concerned?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My heart rate has increased and is above 100 bpm for about two days. I am experiencing this for the first time and I have not done any tests regarding this issue. Is there anything that I should be concerned about?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query, and I would like to know some more details about your present problem to help you with it. Do you feel palpitations or any other cardiac symptoms when your heart rate is increased? Did you have a fever for the last 2 days? Did you have any other symptoms like sore throat, body ache, headache? Are you under any stress or anxiety? Do you have thyroid disease, or are you under medication for it? For further discussion and management strategy, kindly get back with the above-asked details and ECG (electrocardiogram), if available. Take care.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply. I feel palpitations when my heart rate increases. Before five to six days, I had a fever. But for the last two days, there is no fever, sore throat, etc. There is only a headache on the left side, but sometimes it is only mild. Actually, I have been tested positive for COVID-19, but as of now, I have no COVID-19 symptoms. My oxygen level is good. The only problem is that my heart rate increases above 100 in rest and sometimes causes palpitations. This problem began after I started staying alone in the room to isolate myself. Can you help me with this?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I was expecting that you might be having a COVID-19 infection. As now we know the cause, I can help you with your problem. Usually, due to viral or any other infection, our body tries to react to it. The increased heart rate is part of your body's response to fever and the recent COVID-19 infection you are having. Once the infection comes under control, your heart rate will come back to normal. Do not worry about your tachycardia (increased heart rate). Stay calm. Do not be anxious about the disease and maintain proper hydration by taking plenty of fluids and juices. If you have a fever, take tablet Paracetamol 650 mg. Consult with your doctor and take appropriate medicines for COVID-19 as prescribed. Keep checking your oxygen saturation after walking for four to five minutes. And if possible, get some blood investigations like CBC (complete blood count), CRP (C-reactive protein), D-DIMER, LDH (lactic acid dehydrogenase), and Sr. Ferritin levels (serum ferritin), if not done before. Take care and get well soon. Get back to me anytime if needed.
