Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have refractory dandruff with hair fall. Can I use Nizoral and Sebowash together? Which oil should I use coconut or olive?

Hello,

Welcome to iclinq.com.

I have gone through your query and understood your concern. Dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis is an important cause of increased hair shedding. If I was your treating doctor, I would have asked you to use an antidandruff lotion/shampoo e.g 2% Ketoconazole shampoo (Nizral), thrice weekly for two to four weeks followed by once or twice weekly for maintenance. It is available OTC. If that seems insufficient, then I would suggest that you see a dermatologist. Your dermatologist might prescribe you a topical steroid lotion (Elocon lotion), to be applied twice daily for two weeks. The topical steroid lotion can be stopped once the dandruff is significantly controlled and thereafter the improvement can be sustained with just an antidandruff lotion. Sebowash too, contains a topical steroid Fluocinolone but since the contact time of shampoo is not more than five to seven minutes therefore a topical steroid lotion would work better rather than a steroid containing shampoo. Oils have no role in dandruff, whatsoever and are better avoided. Infact hair oils are said to worsen dandruff. I hope this helps.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
