Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have had dandruff issues and an itching sensation in my hair with severe flaking. I am currently using anti-dandruff shampoo for the same. Is there any other medication available for the same?

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

As per the history provided, seborrheic dermatitis or dandruff of the scalp may appear on and off due to multiple factors throughout life for 99 percent of individuals. The factors responsible for that include hormonal fluctuations, climate changes, stress, history of generalized dry skin, infections, dietary changes, inadequate water intake, and sharing of belongings like helmets or caps, leading to mild fungal infections of the scalp.

An antidandruff shampoo is very beneficial in getting rid of dandruff. However, in the absence of efficacy and severe flaking and itching even after using it, I suggest you follow these measures.

(Consult your specialist doctor, talk with them, and take medications with their consent.)

1. Use Salicylic Acid, and Ketoconazole medicated shampoo twice a week. Dilute it with water in a 1:3 ratio, apply, and massage for one minute. Keep for five minutes and wash off. They must be used for at least eight weeks and may be repeated when dandruff issues occur. You can use this shampoo instead of an antidandruff shampoo in case of severe dandruff and flakes.

2. Capsule Itraconazole 200 mg once daily after dinner for two weeks. They may help to get rid of the itching associated with seborrheic dermatitis.

3. Take multivitamins and multi-mineral capsules containing Vitamin C, Zinc, and Vitamin B complex after breakfast for one month.

4. Stagnation of sweat on the scalp is one of the reasons for their appearance; therefore, ensure to wipe off any persistence of sweat each time you sweat.

5. Proper hydration helps in reducing their appearance. Ensure consuming at least 12 glasses (250ml) of water a day.

6. Avoid oily and fried food, red meat, sweets, and milk and dairy products. Instead, consume more fruits, vegetables, and fiber-rich food items.

Seborrheic dermatitis may be on and off. However, as I have mentioned, stress management is one of the critical factors which help with the regeneration and rejuvenation of scalp skin. Therefore, make sure to reduce stress levels by indulging more in leisure activities and activities that lift your mood. In addition, dietary balances and hydration are also important in maintaining a healthier scalp and reducing the appearance of flakes or dandruff.

I hope I was helpful to you.

Thank you.
