What could be the reason for a small dark spot in the mouth?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have a small dark spot in my mouth. Is there something to be worried about?

Answered by Dr. Naveen Thomas

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

It seems like a blood clot due to injury while chewing or eating food; usually, it should go away in a week or two. It also can be a mole if it is present for a long time.

Do you have any habit of cheek bite? When did you start observing this black spot? Was there any pain recently? Kindly answer the questions for a better evaluation.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thanks for the reply.

I only noticed it yesterday, so I am not sure how long it has been there, and I do not remember having pain. I often have bad taste in my mouth, especially in the morning. How could I get rid of this? Is it a microflora imbalance?

Answered by Dr. Naveen Thomas

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

The bad taste can be due to gum infection or food impaction between teeth gaps. I suggest you brush twice a day after food and use a mouthwash or warm salt water gargle.

I also recommend cleaning your teeth by a dentist every six months or so. Please wait for at east two weeks to see whether the black spot reduces in size and disappears; if the spot increases in size, let me know or consult a dentist in your area.

Hope I have clarified your query.

Thank you.
