I had unprotected sex 10 days after my ovulation, but my period is late. Am I pregnant?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My partner and I had sex on August 3rd, seven days before my period. My menstrual cycle is 30 days. My last period was on July 11th -14th. We do not have any protection and he ejaculates inside me. Now I am delayed for almost two days. I do not have any pregnancy symptoms. I am totally fine. But I am so stressed and cannot stop thinking if I am possible to get pregnant. I do not know what to do. I hope you can help me.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Do not stress out. There is a little chance of getting pregnant if intercourse is done in the later half of the menstrual cycle. As you had your last menses on 11th and I assume you have regular cycles, wait until 14th. If periods did not come, get a urine pregnancy test and you can get back to me anytime.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

My ovulation date was on July 27. Is it safe to have sex 10 days before period? Before we do sex, I am always checking my period tracker app. My bleeding lasts only for three days. Am I just paranoid or stressed? I cannot stop thinking.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

If you ovulated on 27th July and had sex on 3rd August, it is around after seven days of ovulation. So there is less chance of getting pregnant. However, you need to wait until the expected date of your menses. Please practice contraception if you do not need pregnancy because this is not a very reliable method to avoid pregnancy. It has high failure rates.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

Right now, I have some bleeding on my underwear. And also, I am experiencing cramps too.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

It seems your periods have started then. If you are apprehensive about pregnancy, you can get a urine pregnancy test at home. But it should come negative. If there is a lot of pain, you can take tablet Mefenamic acid once.
