Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My periods are late this month by seven days, and I am not sexually active, so what other reasons might have caused this? I have never experienced a delayed period. I have been dealing with stress and some weight gain at the moment. In the last month, I have gained around 5 kg due to excessive stress eating. I have never experienced late periods, and my flow was really heavy for the last three periods. When should I consult a doctor?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I thoroughly read your query and understand your concern.

First of all, stop stressing about it. If you are not sexually active, then you do not need to do anything. The menstrual cycle can vary because of a variety of factors and the most important being stress and weight gain. I can see that recently you have gained 5 kg and are also experiencing stress. So in your case, this might be a reason. Just wait for another week. I suggest you try to make some dietary and lifestyle modifications. I suggest you exercise daily and consume foods rich in protein but low in fat and carbohydrates.

Hope this has addressed your concern.

Best regards.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thanks for the reply.

I get cramps and pain in my lower back, and a lot of mood swings, but I did not get periods. Please help.

Answered by Dr. Deepika Joshi

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

If you have cramps, you might have your period in a few days. If cramps are bad, I suggest you take a painkiller that is available over the counter. Mood swings can be there premenstrually. When a person gains weight, it leads to disturbance in the hormonal milieu, thus causing a delay in the period. So I would suggest you wait for one week, and if you do not get your periods even after one week, Progesterone can be taken to induce withdrawal bleeding. But since you are experiencing premenstrual symptoms, there is a possibility that you will get your periods in a week. So I suggest you get a few blood tests if possible if you do not get your periods after a week. Serum TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) and serum prolactin have to be investigated.

Hope this has addressed your concern.

Best regards.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
